Everything You Need to Know About Broadband Light Treatment

First impressions are often based on outward appearances, so it makes sense to want clear, healthy skin. There are tons of options for creams and lotions that claim to help the appearance of the skin, however, they can’t penetrate to the deeper layers. These deeper layers of skin are where the process of aging takes place, so a more targeted approach is necessary to truly stop the clock on aging. Our Memphis dermatologist team at Dermatology Realm has everything you need to know about BroadBand Light skin treatments and how they can leave your skin feeling fresh!

BroadBand Light skin treatment has been gaining popularity here in the Mid-South, but what exactly is it and how does it work? Keep reading to learn all about this innovative treatment that is a cornerstone for Memphis skin rejuvenation!

What is BroadBand Light (BBL)?

Forever Young BBL from Sciton is a gentle, non-invasive procedure that uses pulsed light to give you clear, younger-looking skin. Treatments send light rays into the deepest layers of your skin to help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, invigorate your skin, and boost your body’s natural ability to fight signs of aging. At your initial consultation with our medical aesthetician, Denise LaForce, and the team at Dermatology Realm, we’ll examine your skin and create a unique treatment plan to help you meet your skincare goals!

How does BBL work?

First, it’s important to know that BBL is not a laser treatment. Instead, it uses intense pulsed light that we can filter several different ways to address a wide variety of skin conditions. BBL can effectively treat acne, rosacea, age spots, sun spots, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven tone and texture, and so much more!

Here at Dermatology Realm, we use the BBL device developed by Sciton. The device emits broad-spectrum photothermal energy. This is absorbed by the brown pigment (melanin) in the skin that causes redness.

As the upper layers of skin absorb the heat and energy from the light, pigmented skin cells are destroyed and superficial blood vessels in the area are closed off. The light’s energy and heat also trigger a natural wound-healing response that will generate new cells and boost new collagen production.

What to expect from BBL skin treatment

Before your treatment begins, we’ll apply a topical anesthetic and possibly a cooling gel. You’ll wear safety glasses to protect your eyes during the procedure but you may still see some flashes of light. Don’t worry, though – these won’t harm your eyes! You’ll feel some warmth as we run the BBL device over the targeted area. While this procedure isn’t painful, you may experience some very slight discomfort on more sensitive areas, such as the upper lip.

Treatment time with BBL will vary depending on the area and issue you’re looking to address. However, one treatment will typically last from a few minutes to half an hour at most. Once you’re finished, we’ll apply moisturizer and sunscreen to soothe and protect your skin.

Frequently asked questions about BBL

This FDA-approved skincare treatment is still relatively new, so of course, you have some questions! Dermatology Realm is here to help. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about BroadBand Light skin treatment.

Is BBL a one-time treatment?

BBL is NOT a one-and-done treatment. While your exact treatment plan will be personalized for your unique needs, we typically recommend four treatments a year.

What areas can BBL treat?

Anywhere! The best part of BBL is that it can be used in any area of your body that you want to improve.

Is there any downtime with BBL?

Following treatment, you may see some redness on and around the treated area. There may also be some slight swelling for a day or two. However, you can apply makeup, go to work, and return to your routine as soon as your appointment is complete.

Is BBL covered by insurance?

This treatment is NOT covered by insurance. However, based on the satisfaction of our patients who undergo treatment, we would say it’s well worth the investment!

Is BBL safe for all skin types?

The procedure is safe for people with light, untanned skin. Since melanin absorbs the light, olive or brown skin is at risk for burning, hypopigmentation, hyperpigmentation, or scarring. Safer skin rejuvenation options for people with more melanin include chemical peels and certain types of laser treatment.
