Platelet Rich Plasma for Hair Loss

Hair loss is a common issue, with an estimated 60% of men and 50% of women in the US dealing with the effects. There are several causes of hair loss, including heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions, and aging. Alopecia areata is another common cause of hair loss, with more than six million people diagnosed with the autoimmune disease.

At Dermatology Realm in Memphis, we offer Platelet Rich Plasma treatment to stimulate natural hair growth. Keep reading to learn more!

What is Platelet Rich Plasma?

Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP, therapy for hair loss is a three-step treatment to help stimulate your natural hair growth. The process involves drawing your blood and processing it with special equipment before injecting it into your scalp.

PRP hair treatment triggers your hair growth and increases the blood supply to your hair follicles to maintain new growth and improve thickness.

At Dermatology Realm, we use the ProGen Platelet-Rich Fibrin System, the “next generation” of PRP treatments. ProGen eliminates contamination concerns that were prevalent with previous PRP isolation systems.

The process requires a small blood sample, which is then processed safely, effectively, and quickly—taking as little as 30 minutes.

How does the PRP process work?

The PRP process at Dermatology Realm starts by drawing a blood sample. We’ll put your blood through the ProGen controlled-isolation process, which uses a unique operating technique to protect and preserve the platelets.

The ProGen method eliminates contamination from red and white blood cells. Platelet concentration is achieved when there’s double the amount of platelet-rich plasma in the blood sample, and the resulting color is golden, similar to straw.

The complete treatment with ProGen takes approximately 30 minutes.

Everyone does three, then most will do ongoing maintenance every three to six months, though we generally recommend three treatments four to six weeks apart.

We suggest a follow-up appointment six weeks after your last treatment for pictures and any follow-up care, a three-month follow-up appointment, and a six-month follow-up if needed.

What to expect with PRP for hair

Since ProGen PRP uses substances from your body, there’s minimal risk of an allergic reaction. You may experience tenderness, swelling, discoloration, mild (temporary) irritation, itching, and tenderness at the injection site.

There may be slight discomfort during the injection process, such as redness or bruising, but it will go away shortly after your treatment.
