Skin Tightening Procedures

As your skin ages, you may find yourself missing the tightness and vibrancy it possessed in your youth. The natural effects of getting older and a lifetime of sun damage can wreak havoc on your skin, causing a loss of collagen and elasticity plus changes to the tone and texture. If you’ve noticed jowls, volume loss, or sagging skin recently, you may be worried that a facelift is your only option. Fortunately, Dermatology Realm has a variety of nonsurgical and minimally invasive solutions available to tighten your skin, restore lost volume, and create a healthy glow!

Luckily, you no longer have to choose between the status quo and surgery. Here at Dermatology Realm, we’re proud to offer a wide variety of nonsurgical and minimally invasive solutions that tighten your skin, restore lost volume, and create a healthier, more youthful glow. Using nonsurgical  therapies, our expert team is able to give you skin that’s:

  • tighter
  • fuller
  • lifted
  • stronger
  • more elastic
  • clearer
  • and healthier

When you schedule a consultation in our Germantown office, Dr. Baker can help you choose the right option for the improvements you want to make. Let’s take a closer look at what we have available and how these treatments can help turn back the hands of time!

Sciton SkinTyte™️

Sciton ST offers our patients a fast, safe and effective treatment tailored for all skin types. The system uses an infrared light source to tighten your skin predictably, effectively, and comfortably for a firmer and more youthful appearance. It does this by utilizing advanced infrared light technology to deeply heat the dermal collagen while continuously protecting the area being treated with sapphire contact cooling.

The Sciton ST system is so gentle that there’s no need for even a topical anesthetic! Energy is delivered in rapid pulses to promote contraction and partial clotting of the collagen, which initiates the body’s natural healing process and leads to the appearance of firmer tissue. Since there’s no downtime, patients are able to resume their regular activities immediately following treatment.

How Injectable Treatments Can Work For You

Thermascan

Thermascan is another non-invasive procedure that targets the collagen layer of the skin, erasing fine lines and tightening loose skin. Like Sciton ST, this treatment uses an infrared laser to rejuvenate your skin from the inside out! The laser energy delivered by Thermascan penetrates into the upper layers of your skin, and is then absorbed by the targeted areas. This stimulates the fibroblast cells in the skin to begin generating collagen, while cooling technology protects the sensitive layers of your skin.

Because the collagen and elastin fibers will continue to multiply after the initial treatment, patients will see results improve over a period of weeks to months.  It offers precision skin tightening by stimulating collagen growth, and does it all with no downtime! It typically requires four treatments, four weeks apart, and includes your face and neck. Patients love the way Thermascan helps to restore the natural beauty of their skin, making it softer, smoother, and more vibrant.

Ultherapy

Ultherapy is a new non-invasive skin tightening procedure that uses ultrasound with your body’s own natural healing process to lift, tone, and tighten loose skin. This non-surgical alternative to a traditional facelift can also counteract signs of aging on the neck and chest, as well as drooping of the brow area.

Ultherapy targets areas beneath the skin with focused ultrasound energy to support the regeneration of collagen. The heat energy from the applicator is aimed at three different depths: the muscle, skin, and any superficial wrinkles. This stimulates collagen and elastic tissue, resulting in firmer skin, less sagging, and fewer wrinkles in the treated areas.

A single procedure can last anywhere from 90-120 minutes, depending on the areas being treated. There’s no downtime involved with Ultherapy, and patients will typically see the first results within a few days. After this short-term “boost,” the natural process of creating new, more elastic collagen will continue to build over time.

Everything You Need To Know About Laser Tattoo Removal

Nobody makes it through life without an ill-advised decision or two. But when one of those mistakes is immortalized in a tattoo, it can make it a whole lot harder to forget! Whether it’s an ex’s name, an image that hasn’t held up well over time, or a symbol for something you’d rather not be reminded of, some tattoos simply don’t make the cut. Fortunately, you don’t have to spend a lifetime with a tattoo you hate!

Here at Dermatology Realm, we’re proud to offer laser tattoo removal to patients across Memphis and the Mid-South. Although most people are aware that laser removal exists, there’s still a lot of confusion and misconceptions out there about how the procedure actually works. If you’ve ever considered having a tattoo removed, keep reading below as we cover all the basics you need to know before making your decision.

What is laser tattoo removal?

There are multiple ways to remove tattoo ink from the skin, but laser removal is the most effective method, and certainly the most popular. This is due in large part to the high success rates and lack of any serious side effects. Technological advances over the last several years have made this removal process much more affordable and mainstream, but it still remains a bit of a mystery to the general public.

The truth is that ink particles in the skin are very difficult to remove. Consider this: your body views those particles as foreign objects and is constantly trying to break them down and eliminate them using an army of white blood cells, but they just can’t get the job done! That’s because the ink particles are so much bigger and tougher. The most the white blood cells can do is slowly erode the ink, which is why all tattoos fade with enough time.

Those particles are clearly tough stuff, and that’s why we have to use something as strong as a laser to remove them. Not just any laser will do, however. Tattoo removal requires a specialized ultrashort pulse laser, which works by emitting very hot blasts in quick bursts to heat up and break apart the ink particles.

The pigment of the ink makes a difference as well. Because different pigments will absorb different wavelengths of light, the laser must be set to the right wavelength in order to break down the ink. Tattoos that have different pigmentation will require more than one adaptor to break down each type of ink particle.

Remember those white blood cells that stay busy attacking the ink particles? Here’s where they finally have their moment of glory! Once the laser breaks the ink down into small enough particles, the white blood cells are able to seize them and carry them to the liver, where they will be flushed out along with any other foreign objects or toxins.

Laser tattoo removal is a very effective procedure, and will work for almost anyone. Be aware, though, that it is not a “one and done” procedure. It will generally take multiple sessions to completely remove any tattoo.

Everything You Need To Know About Laser Tattoo Removal

How many sessions will it take to remove a tattoo?

There’s no “one size fits all” answer to this, but the average number of sessions is anywhere from six to twelve, depending on the specifics of your particular tattoo. Rarely, a removal may require a dozen or more sessions, but this isn’t the norm. You’ll need to give your body time to heal between each session, usually at least six weeks. This gives you time to recover from any temporary damage done by the laser, and is also when your body will flush out the broken down ink particles.

There are a few factors that will determine how many laser removal sessions you need in total. We’ll outline them below.

The colors in the tattoo

The color of your tattoo will play a big role in how effective laser removal will be. Darker pigments take fewer sessions to break down than lighter ones. Why? A laser is basically amplified light, and like any black surface, dark or black ink will absorb the most light. That means the laser will be at its most effective on tattoos that are primarily black or dark ink colors.

Tattoos that are composed of lighter colored inks are more reflective, so the light bounces off them. When less light is absorbed, the laser becomes less effective. For example, yellow and purple ink are notoriously difficult to remove and may require a few extra sessions for the best results.

The location of your tattoo

The parts of your body with the most blood circulation are where tattoos will fade the fastest. That’s why tattoos that are further away from your heart, like those on your hands or feet, will look more vibrant for a longer period of time. Removing a tattoo from somewhere on your torso will be easier than removing one from your arms or legs.

How long you’ve had the tattoo

Although tattoos are permanent, they do fade over time. The older and more your tattoo is faded, the fewer sessions it will take to remove it.

It’s important to have realistic expectations about the laser removal process. If you require, say, eight sessions, and have at least six weeks of healing between each one, the entire process will take about a year.

Is laser tattoo removal painful?

Laser removal involves applying extremely hot, concentrated light to your skin—it’s not a walk in the park, that’s for sure! But everyone’s tolerance for pain is different. Some people who have undergone laser removal have experienced significant discomfort, while others say it’s comparable to getting the tattoo in the first place. There can also be some lingering soreness after each session. This is usually similar to what you’d feel with a small burn or blister.

Are there any side effects from laser tattoo removal?

As long as the removal procedure is performed by an experienced medical aesthetician like specialist Denise, the process is completely safe. There is a chance of side effects, however, and it’s important to be aware of those before making your decision.

Hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation

The most common side effect for most people undergoing laser tattoo removal is a change in the skin pigmentation, especially for those who have darker skin tones. Your body may respond to laser treatment by producing too much or too little melanin in the affected area. This can result in a darkening of the skin (hyperpigmentation) or a lightening of the skin (hypopigmentation.) These issues are cosmetic, and not associated with any adverse health effects. In most cases, any pigmentation changes will be temporary and should resolve themselves within 6-12 months of the laser removal process.

Skin sensitivity

Redness, tenderness, and swelling are common after the procedure. Some bruising and blistering can occur as well. Like pigmentation issues, these will resolve themselves naturally over time. While the treated area is healing, it’s at a greater risk for infection, so it’s very important to follow all of the recommendations you are given to minimize the risks of any adverse effects.

Scarring

Many people worry that laser removal will lead to noticeable scarring, but this is actually extremely rare. After-care does play a large role here, however. You should always ensure you’re taking the appropriate steps to treat the lasered area as directed, so it can heal properly. If blisters and scabs form, do not pick at them! This can result in permanent scarring.

Staying Healthy During COVID-19

With the current global health crisis our country is facing, it’s more important than ever to prioritize self care and hygiene. As businesses around the country continue to close due to state mandated guidelines and recommendations by the CDC, we want to do our part to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and keep our patients healthy! While our office will remain open, we’ll also be providing virtual care for routine visits and emergency situations.

While we all adjust to the changes surrounding COVID-19, we decided to put together a quick list of ways you can help flatten the curve, while still taking care of your skin!

#1 Wash Your Hands

We know you’ve been hearing it all the time, but we can’t stress it enough! Washing your hands is the most effective way to help slow the spread of COVID-19. By simply washing your hands for 20 seconds with soap and water, you can prevent thousands of germ particles from being spread to (and from!) the surfaces you touch regularly.

Increased hand washing and use of hand sanitizer can dry out your skin. It’s essential to keep your skin hydrated and healthy, to prevent dry, cracked skin. Here are some tips for dry skin relief:

  • Wash your hands in lukewarm water.
  • Use a clean hand towel, rather than paper towels or napkins, when possible.
  • Apply lotion or moisturizer after drying your hands and using hand sanitizer.

If you regularly use lotion, but your dry skin persists, set up a virtual appointment and we’ll find a treatment that’s right for you.

#2 Don’t Touch Your Face

Again – we’re sure you’ve heard it, but it can’t be said too much. This is a habit that many of us have and don’t even realize! However, with the current threat of COVID-19, it’s crucial to be cognizant of this and work to change it. When you touch your face, all the germs from EVERY surface you’ve touched can be transmitted, leading to the spread of any number of illnesses. It might take some work, but it’ll be worth it to break this habit!

#3 Schedule A Virtual Appointment

Taking care of yourself during the current health crisis may take a backseat to other worries, but it doesn’t have to! You can continue to prioritize healthy skin, without going against the CDC’s guidelines to practice social distancing. By scheduling a virtual appointment with Dr. Baker, you can find out the best way to proceed with your current treatment, without having to visit the physical office. This allows you to keep up your routine visits without missing a beat!

We know times are changing, and we’re ready to adapt our practice to fit your needs! As we all continue to do our part to slow the spread of COVID-19, we want you to know we’re here for you. While we strive to do our part and practice social distancing, we’ll be happy to help you with any questions you may have surrounding virtual appointments

How Injectable Treatments Can Work For You

Enter any store and you’ll see the skin care aisle is packed top to bottom with topical treatments like rejuvenating masks, anti-aging serums, and overnight creams. While many of these over-the-counter products are useful for reducing the signs of aging, they can only go so far. That’s because our skin begins to slow down collagen production as we get older, which leads to sagging and an overall loss of elasticity. While facelifts, eyelid rejuvenation, and neck contouring procedures can successfully minimize the effects of aging, many people are looking for an alternative to plastic surgery. That’s where Dermatology Realm can help!

Safe, effective, non-invasive options for rejuvenation

Plastic surgery isn’t for everyone, but fortunately, there are a number of nonsurgical options to choose from that can help you turn back the hands of time by diminishing fine lines and wrinkles, restoring a more even skin tone, and improving the appearance of scars and blemishes. At Dermatology Realm, we offer injectable treatments that are non-invasive and require minimal downtime, sparing your body the stress of recovering from a surgical procedure while still taking years off your face!

If you’re unhappy with the look of your skin as it ages, our expert team has the skill, knowledge, and expertise to deliver superior results you’ll love. We can treat a variety of areas, including your mouth, nose, cheeks, hands, and more using high-quality fillers like

  • Juvederm Volbella
  • Juvederm Ultra Plus XC
  • Juvederm Voluma
  • Restylane Silk
  • Restylane Lyft

Each of these fillers has unique properties and durations, and we’ll customize a treatment plan based on your unique needs. Our Botox®, Dysport, Juvéderm, and Restylane products are always injected by Dr. Baker for the safest, most effective outcome.

Non-surgical facial rejuvenation often involves combining treatments, including injectable fillers to restore volume and soften wrinkles with chemical peels or laser therapy for skin resurfacing. When you schedule a consultation with our Germantown office, we’ll be able to advise you on the treatment option we feel will be most beneficial to you, as well as the results and recovery you can expect.

How Injectable Treatments Can Work For You

Our injectable procedures

Botox/Dysport

Dr. Baker offers two types of injectable toxin, Botox and Dysport. The injections are non-invasive and almost entirely pain-free. Dr. Baker uses extremely thin needles to administer the injections, and while there may be a small amount of discomfort initially, they shouldn’t cause any irritation or inflammation. For patients who are anxious about the procedure, we have a topical numbing cream we can apply to the area before administering treatment.

The procedure itself is quick, and is usually completed within ten to fifteen minutes. This makes it convenient for patients with busy schedules, since regular daily routines can be resumed almost immediately afterwards!

Toxins have several uses. It can be used to soften or eliminate frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead creases, and lines around the mouth. It can also be used to elevate or lift the brow, soften the chin, shape the brow, and improve the appearance of old or new facial scars. When used in the neck and chest region, toxins can often minimize creases, wrinkling, and “turkey neck.”

The benefits of toxins can extend beyond cosmetic appearances, as well! While the injections are generally used to smooth the skin and reduce lines and wrinkles, toxins have also been FDA-approved for a number of other medical conditions. These include migraines and severe underarm and palm sweating that hasn’t responded to topical agents.

Juvéderm

Like Botox, there are several different products included in the Juvéderm family. Each one uses specific concentrations of hyaluronic acid to target different areas of the face. This adds volume to the facial tissue by stimulating the production of collagen, which naturally plumps the skin. The fillers have a smooth, gel-like consistency, and each type is aimed at treating a specific problem area.

Juvéderm Voluma XC adds volume beneath the surface of the skin to increase the size of the cheeks

Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC fill out wrinkles and lines around the nose and mouth

Juvéderm Ultra XC and Juvéderm Volbella XC work as nonsurgical lip enhancement treatments.

After injecting Juvéderm, Dr. Baker will lightly massage the treatment area to ensure even distribution and reduce the chance of swelling. The procedure will normally take 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the area being treated. The injections themselves contain a small amount of pain-reducing lidocaine to help minimize any pain or discomfort. Recovery time is minimal, and most patients will see results immediately.

Restylane

Restylane, like Juvéderm, is a hyaluronic acid–based facial filler that we use to smooth wrinkles. It can also enhance the lips, target lines around the mouth, add volume to cheeks, and even minimize dark circles under the eyes. When Restylane is injected into areas where collagen has been lost, it helps to smooth and lift the skin, plumping it up and restoring a more youthful appearance. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane also clings to the skin and attracts water, helping to preserve the recently added volume.

Depending on how much work is being done, Restylane injections can take 15 to 30 minutes to complete. Dr. Baker will use a topical cream or ice pack to minimize any discomfort before injecting Restylane under the skin in the treatment areas using an ultrafine needle. There are several kinds of Restylane that can be used for different areas of your face, including:

  • Restylane for facial wrinkles and folds, lip augmentation, and dark under-eye circles
  • Restylane Silk for lip augmentation and wrinkles around the mouth
  • Restylane Lyft for cheek augmentation, laugh lines, and overall volume and fullness

As with our other fillers, downtime is minimal. Most patients return to work after their procedure, but if you have several injections, you might want to give yourself a day to rest and recover. Full results are usually seen within a week, but immediate effects will also be noticeable since the fillers add volume when injected.

Acne Treatments

As common as acne is — affecting about 25% of men and 50% of women at any given time in the U.S.— most people don’t know a lot about it. This skin condition occurs when hair follicles become clogged with dead skin cells and dirt, along with sebum, which is the skin’s natural oil. Acne can show up as whiteheads, blackheads, or pimples, and may appear anywhere on the face, scalp, chest, and back. These blemishes can be painful and unsightly, and more severe cases can lead to noticeable scarring.

Acne can show up at any age, though teens tend to see the worst of it. Here at Dermatology Realm, our expert team offers customized acne treatments for patients of all ages in Memphis and the Mid-South. By collaborating with our patients and personalizing treatments based on the severity of their condition, we’re able to provide optimal results. If you suffer from acne or have any acne scarring, keep reading to learn more about what causes it and how we can help you treat it successfully with our acne treatments!

What causes acne?

There are many different things that can contribute to acne in both teens and adults, including clogged hair follicles, bacteria, and hormones. Skin that produces excess oil is often at an increased risk for acne as well. There are also outside factors that can exacerbate acne, such as diet, stress, and certain types of medication.

There are sebaceous glands that produce oil in your face, forehead, chest, upper back, and shoulders. These small glands secrete an oily serum called sebum into the hair follicles to oil the skin and hair. That’s why acne breakouts occur in these areas more than any other parts of the body.

The different types of acne and acne scarring

Acne spots can come in all shapes and sizes, but it can also be inflammatory or non-inflammatory. Within those categories, there are even more specific types of acne.

Whiteheads and blackheads
This is the most common type of acne. Both are referred to as comedones, or a basic acne lesion. The main difference between the two is that whiteheads are closed at the surface of the skin while blackheads are open.

Papules
These are comedones that become inflamed and form red bumps on the skin.

Pustules
Pustules look similar to whiteheads, but have an inflamed red ring around them. While you should try not to pop or pick acne in general, pustules in particular can leave scarring if you do.

Nodules
Nodules develop deep in the skin and are often painful. They tend to show up as very large and inflamed raised bumps on the skin.

Cysts
Cystic acne can be the most painful and embarrassing. The cysts are large lesions filled with pus.

As with acne itself, there are different types of acne scarring, too. Ice pick scars are small, deep pits. Boxcar scars have sharp angles and can be shallow or deep. Rolling scars have a wavy pattern that tends to be wide or shallow.

Acne scarring is fairly common, especially if you experienced untreated acne as an adolescent or young adult. It can be a frustrating reminder, and you may even feel embarrassed by your acne scars. Fortunately, there are treatments available for both acne and acne scarring! We’ll discuss some of these below.

Acne Treatment

Acne Treatments

Many patients we see have tried countless over-the-counter medicines, washes, and lotions to help diminish the appearance of acne. But persistent acne often requires expert help, which we are happy to provide!

Systemic treatments

Systemic treatments are oral medications that work throughout the body, including antibiotics or Accutane.. A treatment plan like this can effectively treat severe acne that produces redness, swelling, and painful cysts or nodules.

Along with the appropriate skin cleanser and moisturizers, these medications can help dissolve plugs while healing your skin’s surface and deep dermis. While antibiotics kill the infection in lesions and make acne less severe, medications like Accutane or topical medication like Retin-A gel or cream, Finacea, Epiduo Forte, or Aczone help clear the acne. A six-month course of Accutane may be able to permanently stop acne, and can sometimes even reverse acne scarring.

Laser treatments

Laser treatments work by heating the sebaceous glands in the dermis of the skin, which leads to a reduction of active acne outbreaks. The process itself is quick and painless, taking less than 20 minutes with no downtime. A full course consists of 10 sessions, each about 10 days apart, and is often covered by most health insurance plans. Results have been reported to last for up to six months.

Forever Clear BBL

Forever Clear uses an Intense Pulsed Light treatment to penetrate deep into your skin and directly target the affected areas. These treatments can be completed in as little as  one hour, depending on which area of the body is being targeted. We’ll help you personalize a plan for how many treatments you should schedule. The procedure is gentle, and there is virtually no downtime, although you may experience slight redness for a few hours afterwards. Although this is not covered by insurance, many patients have seen amazing results!

Treating acne scars

Some treatments can make scars look less noticeable, while others can eliminate wavy skin texture. The first step in acne scar treatment is a consultation with us, so we can determine the type of scars you have and what your concerns and goals are. Some of our treatment options include:

MicroLaserPeel®
Dermatology Realm offers the MicroLaserPeel®, which is a true breakthrough in laser resurfacing! The special laser peel precisely removes the outermost layers of your skin, and will typically be repeated two to four times, spaced six to eight weeks apart, to get the results you’re looking for. The treatment is tailored to your specific needs, and can also help with other scarring, wrinkles, and keratoses.

ProFractional Laser
This laser treatment works by creating a grid of pinpoint laser beams that zap tiny spots on your skin, producing thousands of tiny but deep columns in your skin. Since your skin naturally repairs itself, new collagen will then grow into the columns where old, dead, and damaged tissue used to be. Old skin flakes away, revealing radiant new skin that leaves acne scars much less noticeable.

e-Matrix
This FDA-cleared treatment smooths out the appearance of scars by plumping up the skin by using radio frequencies under the surface. The process takes place over four to five treatments. In addition to clearing up acne scars, it can tighten loose skin, improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of mild to moderate wrinkles, and fade abdominal stretch marks.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a versatile treatment that can be used on all skin types and colors. Using a diamond abrasion technique for deep exfoliation, we’re able to remove a dead layer of skin to reveal a soft layer of healthy skin. This renews your skin cells, creating a glowing and radiant complexion! Microdermabrasion is generally most effective for mild scarring, and can also be used to treat acne-prone skin, blackheads, and whiteheads.

How To Protect Your Skin From The Sun

Here in Memphis and the Mid-South, the summer months seem to stretch from May until September – and sometimes even longer! Between BBQs, pool parties, and family vacations, it’s hard to stay out of the sun’s rays when they’re at their strongest. And even if you could, who really wants to be stuck indoors half the year? Dermatology Realm wants you to enjoy yourself this summer, but that means protecting your skin. Prevention is key when it comes to avoiding damage, so let’s take a look at why protecting your skin from the sun is so important, how to do it successfully, and how we can help minimize any sun damage you might already have. Keep reading to learn more!

How UVA and UVB pack a punch

Ultraviolet (UV) light exists in the form of both long-wave UVA and short-wave UVB rays that penetrate the atmosphere first before zeroing in on your delicate skin. Once upon a time, researchers thought only UVB rays were responsible for skin damage, but we now know that UVA exposure can also damage the DNA in your skin cells. Together, these rays can injure your skin and change the DNA in the cells, leading to sunburns, wrinkles, and even skin cancer. Not only that, but your eyes and immune system can suffer from sun damage in the form of cataracts and a weakened ability to fight off infections and illnesses.

Sunscreen isn’t just for summer

Memphis gets over 200 days of sunshine every year, making skin protection a must! But even on gray and cloudy days, you can burn. That’s because white and gray act as a reflector for UVA and UVB rays. No matter what the weather is on any given day, or how light or dark your natural skin tone is, you should make it a habit to wear sunscreen during the day whenever you’re outside, near a window, or driving.

Learn how to layer

Cool mornings and sweltering afternoons are a thing around here during fall (and sometimes winter!) so you’re probably already familiar with the concept of wearing layers for comfort throughout the day, whatever the weather. You can apply this to sun protection, too. Wearing lightweight layers such as long-sleeved shirts or bathing suit cover-ups help to shield you from the sun’s damaging rays. Wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses are helpful accessories, and seek shade from umbrellas or trees whenever you have to be outside for long periods of time.

Layering works for sunscreen application, as well. Your daily routine should ideally include:

Layer 1

Use a moisturizer that has a sunscreen of at least SPF 30.

Layer 2

Add a sunscreen that is at least SPF 30.

Layer 3

This layer is optional, but if you wear makeup, try to use foundation and powder that are SPF 30, too. Alternatively, you could use a tinted sunscreen or brush-on sunscreen to replace your regular makeup.

Layer 4

Any portion of your body that will be exposed to the sun should be covered with a 30-50 SPF sunscreen before heading outdoors, including your arms, legs, chest, feet, etc. If you think you’ll be outside for a while, it’s a good idea to wear sunscreen under your clothes as well. Some clothing even has sun protection woven right into the fabric!

Don’t forget to keep your sunscreen close at hand all day. You’ll need to reapply it every two hours, after swimming, or if you’ve been sweating profusely. We recommend:

Blue Lizard

This sunscreen is good for everyone from babies to adults. It’s especially good for anyone with sensitive skin as it’s free of any parabens, chemicals, and fragrance. Blue Lizard is also rich in the physical blockers that give wearers the most protection. The active formulation is water-resistant, and will stay in place even if you get sweaty out in the sun. Water-resistant claims are regulated by the FDA, so you can rely on this label if you’re swimming or participating in anything active outdoors.

Obagi

The Obagi line of sun protection contains a dual-function moisturizer, a sunscreen that uses an exclusive blend of skin-identical ceramides to help improve the appearance of the early signs of aging, and a sunscreen that combines UVB absorption and UVA protection in an elegant matte finish that is non-comedogenic, allergy tested, and dermatologist tested. This is one of the only products we’ve found which allows you to easily apply makeup after application of the sunscreen–just one of the many reasons we love Obagi!

We carry select products from both Blue Lizard and Obagi in our Germantown office.

Timing really is everything

While it’s not always possible, one of the best ways to keep your skin safe is to avoid the sun whenever possible from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Within this window, UV rays are the most potent and have the most potential to damage your skin.

We also encourage you to perform a thorough self-screening every month, looking over each area of your body, including between your fingers and toes. Scheduling an annual skin-cancer screening with your personal physician is also an important part of preventative skin care.

But if you’re already dealing with sun damage…

Even if you’re taking extra steps now to protect your skin, you may not have always been so vigilant. Here at Dermatology Realm, we offer a variety of services to treat discoloration and damage caused by sun exposure. These include:

The XC DayPeel

The XC DayPeel uses an innovative new technology to remove sun damage and fine lines with minimal downtime. It combines elements of our non-surgical facelift as well as our MicroLaserPeel procedures. This is an excellent option for patients who desire skin tightening, but would also like to remove sun spots and the fine lines associated with normal aging. The XC DayPeel is performed in our office during a regularly scheduled appointment. There is no pain during or after the treatment, and most people are able to return to work the next day (with makeup, if preferred.) Some patients may experience minor redness for a week or so after the procedure.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion can help patients achieve cellular renewal, resulting in a glowing and radiant complexion. In just one hour, our diamond abrasion technique will deeply exfoliate and remove layers of dead skin to reveal the soft, supple, and healthy skin beneath it. Microdermabrasion can also be used to treat sun-damaged skin, discoloration due to the sun, blackheads and whiteheads, fine lines, and acne prone skin.

Photofacial

Our photofacial utilizes the Sciton BBL to even out skin tone by reducing sun damage, vascular lesions, and hyperpigmentation.

Common Skin Problems & How We Treat Them

Skin is our largest organ, and it’s also one of the most complicated ones we have. The changing seasons, underlying medical issues, aging, and sun exposure over time can all make their mark on our appearance, producing everything from dry patches to discoloration. While there are a few lucky people among us who don’t need to put any effort into achieving and maintaining flawless skin, most of us have to work for it!

Here at Dermatology Realm, we know how hard it can be to get the clear complexion you desire. Skin issues may be a common problem, but you don’t have to live with them forever! We’re here to help you love the skin you’re in by providing the best treatment options for any concerns affecting you. Let’s take a look at some of the most common skin problems we see, and how we can help you overcome them.

Acne

Acne is one of the most common skin issues, but it’s actually a normal physiological response to the body’s growth and maturation. As our bodies mature, the increase in hormone production stimulates the sebaceous glands to make more oil. This causes the cells lining the outflow duct of the gland to become sticky, eventually leading to the formation of a plug. In turn, this plug prevents oil from escaping through the duct, causing an acne lesion. This issue isn’t limited to teens, however – many adults continue to experience everything from occasional spots to full-blown breakouts.

We treat all kinds of acne problems here at Dermatology Realm. We often start patients off with the appropriate skin cleanser and moisturizers, so that the plugs can be dissolved while increasing the healing of the skin’s surface and deep dermis. Antibiotics can then be used to clear up infection and inflammation in cystic lesions, decreasing the severity of the acne, while topical medications clear the acne itself. Accutane (isotretinoin) is a popular treatment, and a six month course of it has been known to completely and permanently stop acne and even reverse acne scarring.

For less serious cases, we offer a variety of spa services, including microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and deep cleaning facials.

Scarring

Speaking of scarring, acne can do a number on the skin in many different ways. Scars are usually the result of inflamed blemishes swelling, causing a break in the follicle wall. Shallow lesions are usually minor and heal quickly with no lasting damage, but if there’s a deep break, infected material can spill out into the surrounding tissue, creating deeper lesions. The skin attempts to repair these lesions by forming new collagen fibers, but these repairs are rarely as smooth and flawless as the original skin. We offer a few different laser treatments that can help lessen this type of scarring, including:

ProFractional Laser

This laser treatment works by creating a grid of pinpoint laser beams that zap tiny spots on the skin, producing thousands of tiny but deep columns. Because the skin naturally repairs itself, new collagen can then grow into the columns where the old damaged tissue used to be. Old skin flakes away, diminishing scarring and revealing new radiant skin.

Thermascan

This laser allows us to treat acne scars and improves the texture of the skin by promoting new collagen growth. The Thermascan gently heats up the upper layers of your skin, and this heat is absorbed by the targeted areas, encouraging the skin to produce more collagen. This growth will help improve any scarring that’s been caused by acne.

Micro Laser Peel

This intra-epidermal laser peel is able to precisely ablate the outermost layers of the skin. It’s a customized procedure that is typically repeated 2-4 times and spaced 6-8 weeks apart, but it may be repeated until the desired results are reached.

Sun Damage

As wonderful as it can feel to get out in the sun once the temperatures warm up, the UV rays can cause harmful damage to the skin. This can take the form of more obvious imperfections like blotches, dark spots, or freckles, while other damage lies under the first layer of skin and can only be detected with special lighting. When it comes to the kind of sun damage you can easily see, we offer the XC DayPeel.

This brand new treatment combines technology from our NonSurgical Facelift and MicroLaserPeel procedures to remove sun spots and fine lines while also producing some skin tightening. It’s performed in-office during a normal appointment, there’s no pain during or after treatment, and patients experience very minimal downtime. Most clients can return to work the next day with makeup, though there may be some minor redness for up to a week.

Skin that has sun damage may also benefit from microdermabrasion and photofacials, which we offer from our Germantown office.

Melasma

Melasma is a common skin condition which generally appears as brownish or gray-brown patches on the face. While it may sometimes show up on the forearms and neck, it’s more frequently seen on the cheeks, the bridge of the nose, forehead, chin, and above the upper lip. Although melasma is often the result of sun exposure, it can also be caused by hormones like estrogen. More than 90% of the people affected by melasma are female, and it’s so common among pregnant women that it’s even been called the “mask of pregnancy.”

Dermatology Realm has the perfect solution to pigment issues! The Melanage Skin Brightening System is a superficial peel designed to improve the texture and appearance of hyperpigmented skin. This treatment option involves a medicated masque combined with an at-home regimen. There is no pain and very little irritation during the application of the mask, along the lines of a mild sunburn. Most patients will experience a minimal downtime of about 3-5 days.

Although results will vary, Melanage patients tend to see a significant improvement in the appearance of pigmented areas. The system stimulates collagen production, improve overall skin tone and texture, and diminishes fine lines along with the hyperpigmentation caused by melasma.

The Benefits of Vasershape and VaserLipo Over CoolSculpt

In the midst of winter, big jackets, sweaters, and hoodies can help hide some of the extra padding most of us have, but the cold weather won’t last forever! If you’re eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly, but still can’t shift stubborn fat deposits, we could have the answer for you: VASERshape and VASER Liposuction. If you’ve looked into ways to rid yourself of excess fat in the last year or two, chances are you’ve come across a variety of methods, including CoolSculpt. While all three methods are healthier alternatives to traditional liposuction, they take very different approaches to removing fat.

Below, we’ll look at why we believe VASERshape and VASER Liposuction have a number of benefits that CoolSculpt does not. Keep reading to learn more about how each method works, and how to choose the right one for you!

What is VASERshape? How does it work?

VASERshape is a new FDA-approved technology, and Dermatology Realm is the first to introduce it to the Mid-South! This procedure uses low-frequency ultrasound to treat localized fat and cellulite. We use a dual-head beam of ultrasound focused directly through the skin to break up fatty cells by imploding them due to the process of cavitation. This is a painless process and leaves the surrounding tissue completely intact. The released lipids and triglycerides are then drained via the lymphatic system. Over a series of treatments in 5 weeks, you’ll see a noticeable improvement in the localized fat and cellulite of the treated areas. Each VASERshape treatment will get you closer to the smooth curves you crave!

The key to VASERshape is something called ultrasound diathermy. This uses two beams of high-frequency sound waves to generate localized heat beneath the surface of the skin. We do this using a special concave handpiece that delivers two overlapping beams of ultrasound energy. Dr. Baker’s team will use this handpiece to follow the contour of your body, targeting fatty tissue at a specific depth beneath the skin.

The heat produced by ultrasound diathermy creates a kind of “micro-massage” effect on the fat cells. VASERshape warms the connective tissue, redistributes fat, and encourages blood circulation. All that fat cell mobility and increased circulation results in a temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite, giving you a slimmer, smoother profile! You may feel a gentle warming of the skin, or a feeling similar to a deep tissue massage, but the procedure is gentle and non-invasive.

VASERshape can also reduce the pain and swelling that occurs after liposuction and other surgical procedures. For this reason, it’s often recommended in conjunction with VASER Liposuction to help:

  • reduce postoperative pain and swelling
  • promote faster recovery by improving local circulation
  • shape and smooth treated areas
  • see better results week-to-week than when receiving liposuction alone

Let’s explore what VASER Liposuction has to offer!

What is VASER liposuction? How does it work?

VASER Liposuction is a revolutionary new liposuction technique that is fast, efficient, and avoids any prolonged bruising, soreness, and downtime. This procedure utilizes ultrasound energy that travels under the skin to shake fat cells loose from the connective tissue that is holding them in place. Dr. Baker will make small keyhole incisions in the skin so he can slip a thin metallic probe into the subcutaneous fat layer. This probe vibrates in ultrasonic frequencies, which work to further dislodge fat cells. The fat is then immediately removed using a suction device and a surgical tool known as a cannula. VASER Liposuction will also stimulate the production of collagen, which helps to tighten up the skin.

There are a number of benefits to VASER Liposuction. It does not pose any harm to the surrounding tissues because it only targets the fat cells you want to remove. The treatment breaks down fat tissues to make them easier to remove from the body, allowing us to provide a more precise treatment. It’s also extremely safe – in fact, it’s been deemed safer than any other ultrasound assisted liposuction procedure!

This is an excellent treatment option if you want to remove fat deposits from your upper and lower abdomen, or if you’re ready to address a stubborn spare tire. It’s also great for the arms, neck, inner and outer thighs, knees, and many other areas. Due to the fact that there’s no need for an IV or general anesthesia we are able to perform VASER Liposuction right here in our Germantown office. Since VASER Liposuction is not entirely non-invasive, a local anesthesia is used, and some minor bleeding or bruising is possible. However, you’ll be back on your feet in just a few days!

What about CoolSculpt? Where does it fit in?

CoolSculpting is a popular body contouring method that uses cold rather than heat to produce results. This non-invasive technique uses two cooling panels to freeze fat cells, causing them to slowly die so they can be removed from the body. The process is relatively simple: a health care provider marks the precise treatment area, then a transparent gel pad is placed on the area to protect the skin. The head of the applicator is put into position, where the bulge is then sucked into a cup and numbed by two cooling panels. These panels freeze the fat tissue, but cause no harm to the skin, nerves, or muscle tissue. Once the application cup is removed, the frozen mound is massaged to break fat cells up even further.

It will often take more than one treatment to reach the desired results with CoolSculpt. It also takes up to 12 weeks to see the final results, which are more subtle than those received with VASERshape and VASER Liposuction.

Why we prefer VASER technology over CoolSculpting

Because VASERshape uses heat to melt fat instead of cold to freeze it like CoolSculpt, you get skin tightening in addition to a slimmer silhouette. VASER Liposuction has this benefit, as well. It also beats other methods of liposuction because the fat is liquefied before removal, resulting in less lumps and bumps post-procedure. With both VASER technologies, results are seen in less time than with Coolsculpt. That’s because freezing fat can often result in 2-3 months of swelling before seeing the true results, which are often far more subtle than those seen with VASERshape and VASER Liposuction.

Let Dermatology Realm take care of your body contouring needs

If you’re feeling frustrated by fat that diet and exercise can’t seem to shift, VASERshape and VASER Liposuction could be just the boost you need to get the body you want! For patients who are a healthy, stable weight and in good health, we can sculpt your curves into the shape you desire.

Though there are limits to the amount of fat that can be removed, our team is confident in the VASER procedures we offer as a fast, low-pain way to remove stubborn fat deposits. We’re happy to talk with you about how VASER could benefit you, including the potential areas for sculpting, the recovery process, and what you can expect from the results. The Difference Between Medical Spas And Day Spas

Our schedules are busier than ever these days, and trying to strike a balance between work, school, getting to the gym, and everything else you have to handle can leave you feeling drained at the end of every week. All that stress can also take a toll on your body! You may suffer from breakouts, wrinkles in places you aren’t ready for them, or skin that just looks dull. But the start of a brand new year gives you a perfect opportunity to focus on YOU for once!

A “spa day” can be a wonderful way to rejuvenate your skin, mind, and body, but you might not know where to start to book one. You’ve probably heard about medical spas and day spas, and may be wondering what the difference is between the two. Let’s take a closer look at what each spa is, what each has to offer, and why Dermatology Realm could be exactly what you’re looking for!

Medical Spas

Sometimes referred to as medi spas or medspas, these facilities blend medical technology such as injectable fillers, micro laser peels, and laser vein treatments with more traditional spa services like microdermabrasion and deep cleansing facials. Though the guidelines vary depending on your location, Tennessee does not allow anyone other than a physician to own a medical spa, and all medical spas must be registered with the state. Many of these spas include one or more aestheticians in addition to a physician. These aestheticians are typically highly skilled and trained to perform medical grade therapies and procedures.

As a medical spa, Dermatology Realm focuses on improving the overall condition of your body, specifically your skin. Our treatments are designed to provide long-term solutions to cellulite, wrinkles, hair removal, skin pigmentation, and more! We offer a wide variety of services, including:

Acne Treatments

Using a combination of systemic antibiotics, Accutane, and specialized skin cleansers and moisturizers, we can heal the skin’s surface and deep dermis. Antibiotics kill the infection in lesions, decreasing the severity of the acne, while the topical medications work to clear the skin. A six-month course of Accutane can permanently arrest acne, and may even reverse acne scarring.

Injectable Fillers

Dermatology Realm provides several injectable fillers like the Juvederm and Restylane family of products. Each filler has unique properties and can diminish fine lines and wrinkles. Some fillers are used to gently enhance lip volume for a luxurious look. We’re able to treat a variety of areas with these fillers, including the lines around the mouth, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, glabellar lines, cheeks, nose, hands, and more.

Botox and Dysport

Dr. Baker specializes in Botox and Dysport treatments so you can count on gentle treatment with the best results when you visit Dermatology Realm! These injections are one of the most popular non-invasive ways to create a more relaxed, refreshed appearance by reducing and smoothing away unwanted frown lines, crow’s feet, and other wrinkles.

Non-Surgical Facelift

This treatment can take years off your face using an infrared laser to penetrate the upper layers of the skin, stimulating the fibroblast cells to generate collagen and rejuvenating your skin from the inside out. We generally treat the neck, face, the areas around the eyes and mouth, and the cheeks. The lift is tailored to match each client’s skin condition and desired results, and long-term improvement in your skin’s texture and tone is possible. Although studies suggest at least four treatments are needed to stimulate new collagen growth, many people will begin to see benefits by the second treatment.

Dermatology Realm also offers spa services that complement our dermatology focus, such as:

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion can be used to treat blackheads, whiteheads, sun damage, discoloration due to the sun, fine lines, and acne prone skin. Using a diamond abrasion technique, we deeply exfoliate your skin and remove the dead skin layer. This method reveals a soft, supple, healthy complexion.

Deep Cleansing Facial

This facial can be used to control adult and teenage acne conditions, and also helps to prevent scarring. It includes an exfoliating enzyme peel, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial deep pore cleansing, and extracts comedones (clogged hair follicles.)

Chemical Peels

Our medical-grade chemical peels are an excellent treatment to aid in exfoliation and cell renewal! They reduce fine lines, large pores, and acne problems leaving you with a fresh complexion and a visible reduction in the signs of aging.

Smiling woman

Day spas

Day spas are invested in relaxing your mind, body, and well-being. They often include massage rooms, saunas, pools, steam rooms, and other features that create a soothing environment that encourages you to forget the outside world for a few hours. Some spas also provide gentle fitness such as yoga and tai chi, and may offer health programs like life coaching or nutritional services. Day spas can be stand-alone facilities, or be part of a resort.

Some of the typical services available at most day spas include:

  • hot stone massages
  • manicures
  • pedicures
  • seaweed masks and facials
  • Swedish massages
  • hair styling
  • clay mask facials

These treatments do not provide long-term results, but they are rejuvenating and relaxing! Most do not require staff members to have licensed medical training since they are only offering cosmetic services and treatments rather than medical ones. Facials, manicures, and pedicures are often provided by licensed aestheticians, while massages are generally carried out by licensed massage therapists.
