The Difference Between Medical Spas And Day Spas

Our schedules are busier than ever these days, and trying to strike a balance between work, school, getting to the gym, and everything else you have to handle can leave you feeling drained at the end of every week. All that stress can also take a toll on your body! You may suffer from breakouts, wrinkles in places you aren’t ready for them, or skin that just looks dull. But the start of a brand new year gives you a perfect opportunity to focus on YOU for once!

A “spa day” can be a wonderful way to rejuvenate your skin, mind, and body, but you might not know where to start to book one. You’ve probably heard about medical spas and day spas, and may be wondering what the difference is between the two. Let’s take a closer look at what each spa is, what each has to offer, and why Dermatology Realm could be exactly what you’re looking for!

Medical Spas

Sometimes referred to as medi spas or medspas, these facilities blend medical technology such as injectable fillers, micro laser peels, and laser vein treatments with more traditional spa services like microdermabrasion and deep cleansing facials. Though the guidelines vary depending on your location, Tennessee does not allow anyone other than a physician to own a medical spa, and all medical spas must be registered with the state. Many of these spas include one or more aestheticians in addition to a physician. These aestheticians are typically highly skilled and trained to perform medical grade therapies and procedures.

As a medical spa, Dermatology Realm focuses on improving the overall condition of your body, specifically your skin. Our treatments are designed to provide long-term solutions to cellulite, wrinkles, hair removal, skin pigmentation, and more! We offer a wide variety of services, including:

Acne Treatments

Using a combination of systemic antibiotics, Accutane, and specialized skin cleansers and moisturizers, we can heal the skin’s surface and deep dermis. Antibiotics kill the infection in lesions, decreasing the severity of the acne, while the topical medications work to clear the skin. A six-month course of Accutane can permanently arrest acne, and may even reverse acne scarring.

Injectable Fillers

Dermatology Realm provides several injectable fillers like the Juvederm and Restylane family of products. Each filler has unique properties and can diminish fine lines and wrinkles. Some fillers are used to gently enhance lip volume for a luxurious look. We’re able to treat a variety of areas with these fillers, including the lines around the mouth, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, glabellar lines, cheeks, nose, hands, and more.

Botox and Dysport

Dr. Baker specializes in Botox and Dysport treatments so you can count on gentle treatment with the best results when you visit Dermatology Realm! These injections are one of the most popular non-invasive ways to create a more relaxed, refreshed appearance by reducing and smoothing away unwanted frown lines, crow’s feet, and other wrinkles.

Non-Surgical Facelift

This treatment can take years off your face using an infrared laser to penetrate the upper layers of the skin, stimulating the fibroblast cells to generate collagen and rejuvenating your skin from the inside out. We generally treat the neck, face, the areas around the eyes and mouth, and the cheeks. The lift is tailored to match each client’s skin condition and desired results, and long-term improvement in your skin’s texture and tone is possible. Although studies suggest at least four treatments are needed to stimulate new collagen growth, many people will begin to see benefits by the second treatment.

Dermatology Realm also offers spa services that complement our dermatology focus, such as:

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion can be used to treat blackheads, whiteheads, sun damage, discoloration due to the sun, fine lines, and acne prone skin. Using a diamond abrasion technique, we deeply exfoliate your skin and remove the dead skin layer. This method reveals a soft, supple, healthy complexion.

Deep Cleansing Facial

This facial can be used to control adult and teenage acne conditions, and also helps to prevent scarring. It includes an exfoliating enzyme peel, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial deep pore cleansing, and extracts comedones (clogged hair follicles.)

Chemical Peels

Our medical-grade chemical peels are an excellent treatment to aid in exfoliation and cell renewal! They reduce fine lines, large pores, and acne problems leaving you with a fresh complexion and a visible reduction in the signs of aging.

Day spas

Day spas are invested in relaxing your mind, body, and well-being. They often include massage rooms, saunas, pools, steam rooms, and other features that create a soothing environment that encourages you to forget the outside world for a few hours. Some spas also provide gentle fitness such as yoga and tai chi, and may offer health programs like life coaching or nutritional services. Day spas can be stand-alone facilities, or be part of a resort.

Some of the typical services available at most day spas include:

  • hot stone massages
  • manicures
  • pedicures
  • seaweed masks and facials
  • Swedish massages
  • hair styling
  • clay mask facials

These treatments do not provide long-term results, but they are rejuvenating and relaxing! Most do not require staff members to have licensed medical training since they are only offering cosmetic services and treatments rather than medical ones. Facials, manicures, and pedicures are often provided by licensed aestheticians, while massages are generally carried out by licensed massage therapists.
